MASTER SPECIFICATION SECTION 05720 METAL RAILING SYSTEMS PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK A. Provide metal railing system consisting of steel support framing and open grille railing panels. B. Related Work Specified Elsewhere: 1. Concrete Work: Section _________ 1.2 PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS A. Structural Performance Requirements: 1. Metal railing assemblies, including support and anchorage components, shall be capable of withstanding a minimum concentrated load of 200 pounds applied in any direction. B. Polyester Powder Coating: 1. Salt Spray Resistance: When tested in accordance with ASTM B117, Bonderite 1000 steel panels, in a scored condition, exhibit no undercutting after 500 hours in 5 percent salt spray testing at 95 degrees F and 95 percent relative humidity. No rusting or blistering on panel face. Under the same conditions after 1000 hours, the panels showed less than 3/16 inch undercutting. 2. Weatherability: When tested in accordance with ASTM D822, with one year exposure in South Florida, with panels facing south and tilted at a 45 degree angle, a high gloss white polyester coating retains 88 percent of its gloss (gloss reading obtained on washed panels). No film failure. 3. Hardness: 2 H (min) when measured in accordance with ASTM D3363. 4. Direct Impact: Up to 160 in./lbs. when measured in accordance with ASTM D2794. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer's technical data for metal railing system. B. Samples: For each railing design selected, submit one representative sample approximately 8 inches by 10 inches, showing fabrication workmanship and selected coating color. Submit 12 inch long section of top rail showing configuration and finish. C. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings for metal railing system, including plan layout and details illustrating railing height, location and sizes of support structures, and attachment and support details. 1.4 WARRANTY A. Atlantis Products, Inc. certifies that its metal railing systems are free from defects in material and workmanship. The polyester-coated galvanized metal is guaranteed not to crack, peel or blister for a period of 10 years. Accidental damage, defects resulting from improper installation and damage from vandalism or abuse are not included. Warranty is limited to prorated value of the coating, not to exceed the original value of the coating. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURER A. Fabrication: Metal railing panel components shall be manufactured using the electro- forge welding process for complete penetration of cross members. B. Configuration: Metal railing panels and support components shall be fabricated to the configurations shown on the contract drawings. Minimum radius for curved panels is 9 inches. 1. Curved Panels: Bend metal railing panels and other horizontal components to radius indicated. 2. Pattern-Cut Panels: At stairs and ramps, fabricate railing panels such that main bars are vertical, cross bars are horizontal, and diagonal edges at top and bottom are framed with a steel bar. C. Galvanized to ASTM 123 and/or Polyester powder coated. 2.4 METAL RAILING SUPPORT SYSTEMS A. Post-Supported Systems: 1. Posts Anchored in Sleeves or Core-Drilled Holes in Concrete: Steel tubes or bars sized to extend to bottom of sleeves or cored holes. 2. Posts Expansion Bolted to Concrete: Steel tubes or bars with mounting plates welded to bottom. Attach to concrete substrate with expansion bolts through holes in plates. 3. Posts Bracket-Mounted to Edge of Slab: Steel tubes or bars bolted to steel brackets. Attach steel brackets to edge of slab with expansion bolts through holes in brackets. B. Framed Panels Spanning Between Vertical Supports: 1. Individual or multiple panels welded to horizontal steel tubes at top and bottom. Panels mechanically attached to abutting vertical surfaces at each end. 2.5 TOP RAILS Metalco top rail design in paragraph below is standard. Channels, square tubes, and rectangular tubes are available as optional top rails. Consult Metalco. A. Metalco Top Rail: Formed aluminum 2-3/4 inches by 1-1/4 inch. 2.6 FINISHING Note that the galvanizing process can leave minor irregularities in the form of flashings, drips, and drops on the metal surface. These irregularities have no detrimental effect on the corrosion resistance of the coating. A. Galvanizing: Posts and panels shall be hot-dip galvanized in accordance with ASTM A123. B. Color Coating: After galvanizing, components shall be shop coated with polyester powder coating. C. Color of Shop Coating: 1. Black 2. Green 3. Grey 4. White. 5. Blue 6. Brown 7. Yellow 8. Red Choose from standard colors above, or after consultation with Metalco, specify custom color below: 11. Custom color selected by the Architect. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 INSPECTION A. Examine the conditions under which the metal railing system components are to be installed and advise the General Contractor of any conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work. Work shall not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to the Installer. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. General: Install metal railing system in accordance with manufacturer's r recommendations. B. Posts: Set posts into setting holes plumb and square, using non-shrink grout. C. Railing System Infill Panels: 1. Bolt to posts using standard stainless steel bolts. END OF SECTION
